A map is an essential part of any hillwalker or ramblers rucksack kit and walks in rough terrain shouldn't be attempted without a detailed, up-to-date map as well as the knowledge of how to read it.  Always make sure that you carry the appropriate map (or maps if it's a long walk) for the area, a compass and know how to navigate using them.  Other items to carry on longer walks are a headtorch, survival blanket, spare clothing and extra food.  Don't rely purely on a GPS or mobile phone for your navigation.
